Cucumber

Cucumbers are believed to have originated in India over 10,000 years ago along with melons.

This week we have some special cucumbers to share. Silver Slicers <3
They have been bred through a public vegetable breeding program at Cornell University. They are sold under a condition that a portion of sales from the resulting seeds are returned to the program to continue other breeding projects.

Silver slicers are the result of a cross between Boothby blonde (a famously delicious heirloom very prone to multiple diseases) and Marketmore 76’ (classic slicer cucumber developed by the public breeding program at Cornell in 1976 which was the industry standard variety for years). Boothby blonde is recognised by the Slow Food Ark of Taste and was generated by the Boothby family in Maine, US for over 5 generations.

The Silver Slicer has been a real success story where the flavour of one variety has been maintained while it’s been crossed with another that provides increased disease resistance.
