Cippolini onions

Cippolini onions have wide flat bulbs and a sweet juicy flavour. These onions have elevated sugar levels and are really beautiful when roasted and caramelised.

The variety that we have grown this year was bred by an Australian seed company called Magnus Kahl seeds, they specialise in growing allium seed. We think these cipollini onions are related to a famous Italian variety called Borrettana, which have been grown in the Boretto region since the 1400’s.

La Borrettana are an organisation dedicated to the Borettana cipollini onion. They organise sagra events in honour of the Borettana, and meet with growers, chefs and the public to celebrate the onion. The organisation have a fantastic website, and a really wonderful instagram.

Italy is calling us ~ and our kitchen is onion crazy at the moment.
